Habitat for Humanity

1. What does Habitat for Humanity do?

- The Habitat for Humanity partners with volunteers, contributing their time and labor to help building affordable houses for the poor families which can pay mortgage and need houses. It is an international organization which is non-governmental and non-benefit. It devotes to solving the problem about the poverty housing all over the world.

2. Does the organization help all applicants equally? What are the eligibility criteria?

- Not at all. Not every poor family can get help from Habitat. There are four eligibility criterias of which partner families will be chosen: having need for housing, having ability to pay mortgage and willing to partner with Habitat for Humanity.

3. Read about the activity of Habitat for Humanity in your country and provide some statistics.

- Chinese Habitat for Humanity started to work in 2000. It devotes to the post-disaster reconstruction, dangerous house renovation and rural and community development. It conducts programs in six provinces in China which includes Sichuan, Yunan, Guangdong, Guangxi and Hong Kong. There are 45 Chinese workers and 1 foreigner worker. Chinese Habitat has built and repaired more than 3,700 houses since 2000 and the amount of beneficiaries is more than 10,100.

Here are some specific statistics in 2011 from the official website:

·      December 2011: To date, nearly 1,200 volunteers have worked on Habitat’s stilt house restoration and community development project in fishing village of Tai O, Hong Kong. About 50 houses have been restored.

·       November 2011: HFH China raised HK$50,000 (over US$6,400) from booths at the Lan Kwan Fong Carnival, annual street Mardi Gras in Hong Kong’s most famous entertainment area. HFH China has been named the sole charity partner for the Lan Kwai Fong Festival for the next three years.

·       October 2011: In celebration of World Habitat Day, more than 360 volunteers worked on consecutive builds in five areas – Guangdong, Shanghai, Sichuan and Yunnan in China and in Hong Kong.

4. What are the volunteering options for those who are willing to help?

- There are no strict requirements for the volunteers. People who are willing to help others with a warm heart can all be the volunteers. Besides helping to build houese, they can also do some administrative work in the organization and be propagandists who give people speech about Habitat to let more people know more about Habitat. They can also donate money to give the Habitat fanancial support.

5. List the benefits of having a healthy housing and explain how this can impact the lives of home residents.

- Houses are the most basic and important material for the people's daily life.

 Having a healthy housing keeps people safe. Houses keep people away from wind, rain, sunshine and some natural disasters and protect their property.

 Having a healthy housing improves the quality of life. People can pay more attention on their work or study and will be more excellent without worries of where should they live tonight.

 Having a healthy housing from Habitat encourages people who get the house to help others and return society. They get help from society and ohters so they will be willing to help others consciously.
