- Since firefighters work to deal with emergencies and disasters and provide relief, I think their biggest challenge is to assure the safety of their own life while they are fighting the fire. Fighting fire is dangerous sometimes so many firefighters lost their lives in the line of duty. 

- Pros: Being a firefighter, the person will be revered by society because of their contributions. People often consider firefighter heroes when they successfully put out the fire especially save people’s lives.

- Cons: Maybe firefighters’ families will not support them because the work is so dangerous that the families may always worry about their safety.

- In my opinion, firefighters’ work is never an easy work. Though they may not need to fight the fire everyday, they need to train frequently and whenever and wherever the fire occur, they should arrive at the scene first and rapidly plunge into their work which is dangerous. This kind of work which serves the government and people should be respected.

- The visit to Moorhead Fire Department this afternoon let me knew more about firefighters and their work. It means a lot to me.

Bonanzaville Village

1. What themes are displayed in Bonanzaville Village?

- I think the themes of Bonanzaville Village is memories. Bonanzaville Village is a pioneer village and museum with over 400,000 artifacts which include 43 historic buildings filled with history and memories. It shows people how people in the past lived. The exhibits and buildings there are all the memories of the old time.

2. Describe the most interesting artifacts of the exhibition and reflect on their significance. 

- I have most interest in the jinrickshas which were also existed in Shanghai in the old times in China. They are a kind of tricycle. They were the main means of transportation which use human labor in the past. They are slow and sometimes uncomfortable but environmentally friendly without pollution and they provide work for the poor people to make a life.

Moorhead Public Library

- We had a visit to Moorhead Public Library this afternoon and had a lot of fun with the children there. The children there were very young and cute. They played plasticine, ran mazes on the paper and some other kinds of games in groups. I talked to a little boy and helped him ran a maze. He said thank you to me with a sweet smile which moved me. I also played international chess with others. I learned some strategies from the opponents.

- In my opinion, America is good at caring of people. There are all kinds of public benefit activities for different groups of people. This is what China should learn from America. I will share my colorful experiences when I come back to China to let people around me know more about America, the friendly country.

Thanks Giving Day

What are the American people giving thanks for ? Write 100 words.

- The origin of American Thanks Giving Day goes back to the beginning of American history.  The immigrants from England arrived America in 1620. That winter, they had some difficulties of their life, living in the cold and hunger. American Indians, the indigenous people gave they some articles for daily use friendly and taught them how to hunting, fishing and plant corns to make a living. With the help of those American Indians, the immigrants got used to their new life gradually. They invited indigenous people to thanks for the giving of the god on the day they harvested crops. Later, Americans set up Thanks Giving Day to give thanks to those American Indians who helped them and the god who gave them good harvest.

- There is a saying in Chinese, drips of beneficent water must be repaid with overflowing fountains of gratitude. Thanks Giving Day is a good festival which teaches people to remember others who give them help and encourage them to return.

1. How is organic farming different from conventional farming?

- When producing and processing organic products, we do not use prohibited synthetic and persistent pesticides, fertilizers, growth hormones, genetic engineering, artificial ingredients and preservatives, which are usually used in conventional farming.

2. What is the nutrition value of organic food? Provide examples from the article.

- According to the research of Washington State University, organic strawberries have higher levels of antioxidants and higher concentrations of Vitamin C.

  It is found by USDA scientists that organic brands of catsup contain 57 percent higher levels of the health promoting antioxidant lycopene.

  Organic croops contain fewer nitrates, nitrites and pesticide residues but more dry matter, Vitamin C, phenolic compounds, essential amino acids, minerals and total sugars.

3. How do organic practices improve the soil quality?

- The USDA-ARS research showed that the use of manure and cover crops more than offset losses from tillage. Organic practices enhanced microbial activity in more diverse communities of organisms and reduced soil acidity.

4. Why is organic production expensive?

- Because organic production is more healthy to people since it is less or no pollution. The planting, processing, storing, transportation and necessary technology of producing organic production are not easy that means the cost is very high. For example, since organic production uses no pesticides, it means people must use their labor to control pests.

Comstock House

Why is Comstock House an important landmark of local history? Word count: 100 words.

-The Comstock House belonged to a railroad builder, Solomon G. Comstock. The daughter of Comstock became the first female president of Radcliffe College. Comstock was a pioneer in local business. He contributed to drive the growth of Moorhead and surrounding regions. Comstock and his family lived in the house for more than 50 years. It has a story of Comstock and his impact on Red River Valley in Moorhead, Minnesota. The Comstock House was built in 1883 which is over 130 years old now. It is not only an old houses with a long history but also a historic museum for later generations like us to know about and remember the history of Minnesota. It is the house which showcases the popular styles of architecture of the time, Victorian Age.

Nursing Home

Seniors are the socially disadvantaged groups who should be taken good care of because they did lots to society when they were young and they may be disabled and lonely. Firstly, everyone will get old one day and most of us have some contributions to society, so seniors are supposed to be especially cared not only by nurses but also everyone around they if we want to be cared by others when we get old. Secondly, as we get old, we will gradually have all kinds of diseases which make us lose the freedom of movement or have some problems with our eyes, hearing or language competence. At that time, we cannot carry out the daily tasks on our own, so we need others to take care of us. In our visit to the nursing home today, I spend my time with a senior woman who is hard of hearing and cannot walk. She cannot live without someone takes care of her. What’s more, seniors who lose thier spouses and live without their children always feel lonely. The seniors live in nursing home can make friends to chat together and play games and nurses stay with them for most time of the day which will reduce their loneliness. Therefore, we should take care of seniors around us.
